‘Join acclaimed writers Irvine Welsh and Linda Quinn, among many others, at the three-day Pikes Literary Festival 2019’ – FT How To Spend It 2019
For the second year running, the three day annual Pikes Literary Festival will take place 10-12 September 2019. This year’s event will be headlined by screen writer and critically acclaimed author, Irvine Welsh with The Libertines front-man Carl Barât and teacher and author Linda Quinn, plus very special guests, Quadraphenia’s leading actors Leslie Ash and Mark Wingett.
The unique three day event promises to be an absolute sell-out. Highlights will include an exclusive ‘Blacks takeover’ dinner hosted by celebrity chef Luke Thomas, (owner of Soho’s Blacks Private Members Club). Luke Thomas of Blacks says ‘The menu for my dinner at Pikes is inspired by my travels, flavours from around the world underpinned by locally sourced products, an eclectic spread of dishes inspired by the culinary melting pot of today. A few nostalgic flavours adapted to create a social and sharing supper club experience’.
During the three day festival visitors will be able to enjoy a unique open air cinema on Pikes famous neon pink tennis court – Celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year Pikes will be showcasing the iconic 1979 British drama ‘Quadrophenia’ preceded with a special Q and A with actors including Leslie Ash, Mark Wingett and special guests. There will also be a chance to watch a screening of the Spanish documentary ‘De Donde no se Vuelve’ – a profound film about the award-winning Spanish photographer Alberto Garcia-Alix. Debby Lee who produced the highly commended Sky Arts documentary ‘The Who’ will be interviewed by Stephen Armstrong about the documentary and there will be a chance to see a clip from it. Throughout the three days Sa Cultural Montse, a local bookstore will be on-site at the festival selling books to visitors and to add a quintessentially English twist you can also book a place for afternoon tea with Virginia Feelgood for some poetry reading.
Pikes Literary Festival is one of Europe’s most sought-after and below the radar cultural events each year. This year as part of the programme there will be courses, high profile author discussion panels and book readings. For the first time ever, there will also be a dedicated Spanish language day. As well as being one of the few places worldwide genuinely steeped in a unique pedigree of rock n roll history, Pikes has proudly been trail-blazing as a true cultural hub of the Island over the past few years. Today, the hotel represents the original creative, Balearic energy of the island and hosts a raft of cutting-edge art, food and music and popup collaborations and events throughout the Ibiza season.
Dawn Hindle Co-Owner of Pikes says ‘’The Pikes Literary Festival has established itself as one of the jewels in the Ibizan summer landscape. No-one could be better than Irvine Welsh to spearhead our music influenced literary festivities. I’m delighted this year that Pikes are collaborating with Blacks – I have always loved this iconic old school members club in the heart of Soho, with a strong literary influence. Hedonism & sophistication, an exquisite pairing set in the Ibizan hills. We even have a black gate to walk through!”
